The Turks and Caicos Islands, (abbreviated TCI) are officially a British Overseas Dependent Territory, consisting of two groups of islands: the larger Caicos Islands and the smaller Turks Islands. It is known for upscale tourism and as an offshore financial centre.
The total population is about 36,000, of whom approximately 30,000 live on Providenciales, the well –developed island of Turks & Caicos. Cockburn Town, the capital, is on Grand Turk Island. With over 40 small islands, only seven of which are inhabited, the Turks & Caicos islands has a special niche for everyone from modern cosmopolitan resorts, to isolated bird watching in camping tents. The scuba diving is renowned world wide, with “the wall” a spectacular drop off into deep ocean from along the reef which surrounds the archipelago.
TCI currently holds fame for its fabulous beaches – one of the most pristine and unspoiled natural environments in the Caribbean. It also has some infamy for the recent government corruption scandals and political showdown with the UK . the British have reclaimed direct control of their territory and are fully underway to ‘setting things right”. It is accepted by most islanders as necessary, and with some relief. The budgets, infrastructure management, and government policies are now put to transparent accounting, which provides a renewed level of investor confidence.
Greatest 'asset' is its beach. Its sterling reputation has been, justifiably, well documented. For those who haven't heard, I liken it to the beaches displayed in the Corona Beer TV ads. Imagine an unspoiled, primitive beauty that stretches, literally, for miles. My wife and I were often the only ones on this expansive area -- for hours!
